13/06: SUCCESS is " ACCESS"
Project Track Champion came about as the result of one persons idea to make racing more accessible.
As we all have come to know, one of the ways to make this
possible was by way of P.T.C.'s fully accessible race car.
P.T.C. came about on it's own.No one instructed anyone that there was a law in place, that stated P.T.C. must
exist,or face the consequences.
In the near future, such will not be the same for speedway owners of Ontario.
If you are a speedway owner, with a facility(s)in the province of Ontario.
You will need to know that measures to insure that the province will be "barrier free" for those with special
needs / disabilities,are underway,and will include you.
The provincial governments program is called "ACCESS ON"
P.T.C. not only fully supports the program,(now in year 5)
But is in a position to lend support where ever it can.
It is the governments goal to have ALL public used facilities wheelchair accessible, and "user friendly" by the year 2025.
Project Track Champion incourages ALL track owners to
be aware of the NEW measures, and how they will apply to you,the owner.
HELPFUL SUGGESTIONS
1) Become familiar with the program by checking w/site.
www.access.on
2) Funding is available. The Trillium Foundation is a
possibility.
P.T.C. would suggest you contact your local member
of parliament, and note your intentions to him/her.
They may be able to expedite your application.
3) The new rulings as laid out by the government in
respects to "accessibility" are rigid, and will be
strictly inforced.
To avoid being caught up in such a situation, and
insuring your access features are correct.
You may wish to obtain information from your local
municipality,building inspector.
4) In order to save money, and cut corners.
A speedway owner may decide to make "accessibility
features",based on "self interpretation" of such, and
make the changes as they may feel to be acceptable.
P.T.C. WOULD INCOURAGE YOU NOT TO COMMENCE WITH ANY
CHANGES UNTIL SUCH TIME THEY HAVE BEEN APPROVED BY
A CERTIFIED AUTHORITY.
WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT,SUCH WILL BE PAYING YOU A
VISIT PRIOR TO 2025.
5) In order for you,to have a real clear understanding
as to what "barriers" your quest with disabilities
deal with at your race facility.
Borrow a wheelchair for the day,and use it at your
speedway as they would.
You may be quick to discover why they,or their many
friends, do not visit your track,or promote it.
Heaven forbid, someday you, or a loved one may
actually require one.
6) THE GOVERNMENT MAY NOT HAVE ALL THE ANSWERS:
In order to make your quest with disabilities feel
"AT HOME" at your speedway.
Listen closely to them. They may just have an idea
to improve your facility, making their visit a
memorable one.
BUT,MAKE SURE FIRST THAT THEIR IDEA WILL NOT LEAD
TO LEGAL ISSUES FOR YOU LATER DOWN THE LINE.
7) WASHROOMS:
For those with disabilities, washrooms are an issue.
To have a clear understanding as to what they often
incounter.
Place yourself in a wheelchair, and pretend you have
to use your washroom facilities,
Lets assume you require assistance from an aid.
You may wish to ask your spouse to be your assistant.
Upon arriving at your washrooms, you become aware of a
an awkward situation.
You will have to decide which washroom you use.
If the spouse for example is the wife assisting.
Does she take you into the LADIES,or the MENS room?
THE RESTROOMS OF TO-DAY FOR THOSE WITH DISABILITIES
WHO REQUIRE ASSISTANCE ARE CALLED,.......
"FAMILY USER FRIENDLY WASHROOMS"
NOTE MOST COMMON "PORTABLES",(washrooms)DESIGNED FOR
THOSE WITH DISABILITIES,...DO NOT...HAVE ENOUGH ROOM
FOR A PERSON WITH DISABILITIES,THEIR ASSISTANT,AND
WHEELCHAIR.
THE FAMILY USER FRIENDLY RESTROOMS IS THE ANSWER.
FOOD for THOUGH:
You as a speedway owner may feel that the provincial
governments agenda towards accessibility is only
a "money grab",and historical low numbers of those
with special needs/disabilities at your "front gate"
does not warrant,or justify the expected costs to
make the neccesary changes.
CONSIDER THIS:
When a person with disabilities finds the washroom(s)
at your speedway neither accessible,or user friendly.
How then would it be different should you visit an
auto dealership with the purpose of buying a car.
Only to discover that ALL the vehicles for sale are
missing a motor.
If the dealer has a history of trying to sell vehicles
without a motor.
I wonder how many people would show up at the front
door of that dealership?
Project Track Champion is more than just a car with
wheelchair accessibility.
P.T.C. is also here to lend you the speedway owner any
assistance we can.
P.T.C. stands ready to help our provincial speedways
find SUCCESS by way of ACCESS.
